Mitochondria: Between Life and Death

Mitochondria appear now to be once more one fashionable organelle. A quick search on PubMed indicates the number of publisher papers is increasing year alter year…there is a reason to it. Not only mitocôndria have the classical function of being the cell energy suppliers, but they also have other important roles such as maintaining calcium homeostasis, participating in intermediate metabolism, generating reactive oxygen species can act as second messenger or being key players in the processes of cell death. Because of all this it is hardly surprising that mitocôndria have become associated with several pathologies and even with the aging process itself. We now know that muscle or neurodegenerative diseases may have a strong mitochondrial component. Even diabetes is now beginning to be also considered a mitochondrial disease. Due to the different aspects related with mitochondrial physiology and pathology and the recent advances in the area, this meeting is a requirement for the experienced or for the new-comer researcher. We have gathered most of the top scientists in the field and they will be covering several aspects of the role of mitochondrial in cell life and death. The meeting will have the participation of Profs. Vladimir Skulachev (University of Moscow, Russia), Robert Lightowlers (Newcastle, UK), Enrique Cadenas (University of South California, USA), Fabio Di Lisa (University of Padova, Italy), David Nicholls (Buck Institute, USA), Dean Jones (Emory University, USA), Mauro Esposti (University of Manchester, UK), Michael Duchen (University College of London, UK), Vitor M. C. Madeira (University of Coimbra, Portugal) e Paula Ludovico (University of Braga, Portugal).
The meeting is a co-organization of the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNC) and of the Oxidative Stress Group of the Portuguese Biochemical Society. Registration and abstract submission can be made at the webpage http://cnc.cj.uc.pt/~pauloliv/ .
